I attended a really great concert by "Trio Corona" last night in Tucson. Trio Corona is composed of Martin Klabunde, Randy Granger and Stephen Cumberworth (Karnalis) performing original music using native american flute, the hang drum, harmonica(!), kalimba, djembe and other world percussion. You may have heard Randy and Stephen perform individually at a number of flute festivals in the past. They had an additional world percussionist sitting in on several numbers -- she was also outstanding but I've spaced out her name (sorry).

Randy and Stephen were passing through town on their way to the Zion Festival and had set up this small (25-30 people) concert with outstanding local African-drum performer/instructor/guide Martin Klabunde.

Each selection was unique with a different mix of instruments, beat, and style. I really liked the overall vibe of this concert. There wasn't a headliner dominating the group, they all seemed like equals, great performers seamlessly sharing the performance space. The audience was very much engaged and in the space, but you could tell the performers would have also been having a blast if it was just them playing alone.

I hope they do more as a Trio (or better yet, Quartet) and eventually put out a CD (they all have individual CDs, but the Trio is new). I'd certainly recommend seeing/hearing them if you have a chance to in the future.

I like the way the Artist Formerly Known As Karnalis plays.

Hey, cool! I didn't know any Portalites were in attendance! I'm thrilled to hear that you enjoyed our performance! We had a final head count of 23 attendees, plus a couple of "helpers." I really liked how it was set up, with a good balance between mellow vs. upbeat tunes, as well as combo vs. solo or duet tunes. We did indeed have a blast playing that night!

Along with Randy, Martin, and myself, the fourth performer was a visiting drummer from Albuquerque named Heidi, along with her four-year-old daughter Maisha, who showed off her dundun dance. That show was a lot of fun to put on, and I hope that we might be able to do more in the future. It was really sort of a thrown-together sort of affair, with Randy and I just passing through town on our way to Zion. I think it went pretty darn well considering that we had all just met that afternoon, and rehearsed for all of three hours at most. tongue.gif

We played some arrangements of a couple of Randy's songs, some solo pieces of our own (I played my songs "Coyote Memories" and "A Chuisle Mo Chroi"), and some brand new songs that we just created that same day, like the djembe-heavy "Two Funky," and the harmonica feature, "Beat Down Blues." cool.gif Maybe some day we'll be able to do an encore performance!

Thank you for that review sonoran sunset. Thank you for also coming out to the show! I am so glad that our mutual respect as musicians and love of what we do came through. We indeed enjoyed ourselves and probably could have played a few more hours happily. One of the nice things about a 30seat capacity venue is 26plus people make it feel well attended. It is wonderful how the native american flute has connected me, Martin, Stephen, Heidi and her daughter and the audience. We will record together and do more shows which I will remember to post here. Doing a duet with Stephen on Double Barrel Train Wreck was more fun than should be allowed.....luckily it isn't. rolleyes.gif

We had fun at Zion and made it what we could make of it. I was able to bring some awesome flute players on stage with me including Cornell Kinderknecht, Joe Young, Steve Cumberworth, Rod Krug and Scott August and I did an impromptu duet with Anasazi and Hang that was a real treat to play.

Hello Randy,

Welcome to the Portal.

I got to see you put on a little impromptu performance at the 2008 Zion Flute Festival. That was a real treat.

Now that Hangs, and Moyos and Bellispheres are hitting the scene it would be cool if you could offer a workshop at a flute festival someday (hopefully at Yosemite since I will be there and I wouldn't miss such a workshop if it were offered). rolleyes.gif

Thanks Art. I have done Hang workshops at INAFA, Oklahoma etc as well as flute workshops. I'll be at Yosemite in 2010 but have a gig conflict this year. cool.gif The warm metallic sounds really compliment Native flutes I think. I'm always looking for house concert gigs, etc on my travels so maybe we can work something out.

Have a great weekend.
Randy

Randy, the Hang sounds good with all kinds of flutes, in the hands of a great player. Works well with almost any form of Asian flute, and even with silver flute.

Just need to play in that style of music, to get the right sound effect, to make it special, on the Hang.

Wait...it isn't? Ah, you're just saying that 'cause I played better blues riffs at the end than you did. tongue.gif Heh...seriously though, that was a lot of fun, even if I only had a single barrel to contribute to the wreck. wink.gif

Check it out! Martin Klabunde has uploaded videos of the Corona Trio's performance! I've made a playlist of the videos, so you can see the show right here (with admittedly somewhat limited quality)!

We rock. cool.gif

Very cool. I really liked #12, the Beat Down Blues where you are outstanding (actually the only performer standing wink.gif on the NNAH, Non-Native American Harmonica).

Heh, thanks! That song was a lot of fun to play, though my harmonica tends to tear up my lips a bit when I play it that much. I need to get the kind with a plastic comb instead of a wooden one like mine.
