I did a flute-making demo last Thusrday, Sept 24th at Jemez Day School (I went to school here all 7 years). Most of the Students were very intersted in my flutes. I showed each class my flutes; rim-blowns, NAFs, shakuhachi, quena. Some of the younger students just wanted to hear me play, and I was happy to play for them. This was my first time demonstrating to this many children, but I think I did ok. I would switch from speaking in Jemez to speaking in English, because some did not understand as well as others, and some teachers were not Jemez. It was an amazing and tiring experience overall. Here are some photos CLICK HERE
I started at 1030 am, then an hour lunch, then from 12 pm to 3 pm, 30 minutes for each class, 7 classes- K-6th.

Those are great photos- and that is what it is all about, teaching the kids about their heritage. I bet they will remember that day, and you. I am sure you planted some seeds, some things better than what they are fed from our TV's. And another image will remain with them- notall guys in uniform are bad guys.

You are doing what you were meant to do, Young Elk, and I am proud to know you! (Boma says the same.)

That is so good that you would take the time to do this, those are school days kid will remember for a life time. You did good.

You can sense the interest of the kids in your photos. I can also tell you all were very comfortable and were doing something intense and interesting.

That is awesome Aluaki. The young people in that school are very fortunate to have someone like you to come spend time with them. I hope you get the chance to do it more.

Ahhhhh yes . . . more absolutely wonderful flute seed planting! cool.gif It may have been difficult switching back and forth from Jemez to English, but I feel certain that your flutes always spoke a very clear language and message to everyone in attendance. wink.gif Kudos!
