Okay folks, here is the place to put pictures of flute woods if you have them.

I suggest that the posts be strictly wood pictures (including pics of flutes from different woods, of course) and no discussion. To be useful as a "gallery" of woods, it helps if a visitor does not have to wade through ten pages of posts where the pictures are mixed with "chat". We've got some threads for talking about the woods already, so this is a "media only" gallery. Descriptions may accompany the wood pics, of course.

"F#" Gabon Ebony with Amboyna Burl, crafted by Dennis Lombard, of Mountainflutes.

The upper section of the attached combo photo shows the original "flute package" with it's two different blocks/totems! The terrific ebony feather block was designed for "dress up" and the other very nifty two tone back up block was created for safer travel usage and . . . Just In Case! cool.gif However, . . . Since the carved ebony feather block was truly the perfect "correct" size, it was recruited to enhance my already sassy and slick Purple Heart "F" (By Mountainflutes) into a total Flute Hottie! biggrin.gif Yes, I was a "naughty flutie" and I am totally guilty of swapping out another extremely handsome delicately carved feather block to use on this Ebony flute! ohmy.gif Since ya'll are not supposed to reply to this post, and therefore cannot fuss at me here, . . . I will now raise my right hand and promise that I will never again swap any of my flute blocks! ... rolleyes.gif ... Wado for this wonderful wood Brother Dennis!!!

Finally, here are the pictures of the first three flutes I've done. I made the cherry from a stellar pre-bore kit.
The pear is all mine, cut the wood from a large felled branch after a storm took out the tree. The red cedar
is my wife wolf's it is a pretuned kit from stellar, I did the shape to her specifications and carved the wolf block
to look as if you were seeing the wolf looking at the moon from a distance. This also was the way she wanted it carved.
There are plans to add gold pearl eyes to the carving in the near future.

Right Photo: Left2right--->Some Maple bought from a pair of unscrupulous guys driving a black Lincoln, they sell the stuff in big slabs..no idea where they get it from but it's very reasonable; A pair of driftwood styled Western Red Cedars; An Applique' Walnut with Tiger maple overlay.

Some almost finished flutes and a working flute rack.

Marsha, here is the photo of my working flute rack, it only holds 28 flutes, apparently I can't count when I run out of fingers and toes laugh.gif

The Yellowish flute is the "root flute" made from a section of mullberry tree root, inlayed with purple sand and copper before making the finger holes. The other two are aromatic cedar, note the birds are tuning birds, carved ones will be fitted when the flutes are final tuned.
RedRockTom
Two flutes made from the piece of birdseye maple shown on the left (which was purchased from gilmerwoods.com). The top/lighter is a "G" (made from two "slices" from the left hand side of the board) and the bottom/darker is an "A" (made from two slices from the right). The size of the original board was 13/16 x 6 7/8 x 21 7/8. The bore size of both is 7/8" with a wall size of 3/16". The block on the "G" is from Camphor Burl and the block on the "A" is from Walnut.

My latest flute. Made from Goncalo Alves, this is an A with a Padouk block.

It was made from the board shown below. The portion used was the right half of the board, and the center half of that portion. This wood is very hard, on the same scale as ebony (at least, from my experience). When oiled, it darkened up much more than I expected.

Those are some nice looking hobby flutes. The oak leaf is pretty cool, I've never seen a totem like that before.

Sound sample?

THESE BABIES ARE NICE, how did you get the leaf to bend, or is there wasted wood (cut out from solid block)
