Full Version: Duets Or Ensemble, Who Would It Be With?
The Flute Portal Forums > World Flutes and Music > World Flutes General Discussion
Nate
If you can play a duet and/or an ensemble with anyone, who would it be with?

My choice for a duet would be with Emmanuel Pahud, cause I love the blend of the Native and classical flutes together. And Pahud, in my opinion, has the best sound on the classical flute.

My choice for an ensemble would be with Brulé. I love the tunes with band come up with and they really get into it.
Kat
If I think about this one too long, I won't be able to answer lol!

So off the top of my head-
I'd die of happiness to lay down some bass flute for Mary Youngblood to play to.
For an ensemble, I'd love to sit in with Mark Holland and Autumn's Child- as long as they have a great sound man to cover my boo-boo's.

Fondest wish of all- to sit around a campfire with my favorite fluties from the Portal, and just do some friendly jammin'! (That's for when we all get time travel or "Scotty-Beam-Me-Uppers" for easy transport.

Jeff G
Mark Holland, Joshua Bell, Mary Youngblood, Santana.....the list is long and in no particular order.....

Wait a minute- I get one each, and you get them ALL??? ohmy.gif Hmmmm....I need to go revise my fantasies....

Play flute while William Shatner does spoken word song.
Perhaps one of the other portal members could offer to
do interpretive dance.

Nate
@ Kat and Jeff, both great picks. I have thought of Josh Bell, too. Violin and flute would make an interesting combo.

Kat, great idea, only for me I would want Mark with Scott....Mark playing the Bass lines so I could "go insane" on higher keyed flutes, playing off Scott's percussive rythyms.... rolleyes.gif

I'd want that same sound guy though... wink.gif

Here's my story about it, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIC0ZVEdtvo

But continuing the dream: I would love to fly into LA and have Jon Sherman pick me up at the airport and we would immediately start to drive East. Talking flute mostly as we head towards a visit with Marsha, where she would hop in the car and we would continue our Merry way towards Robert's house for a few days....then off to Ed's for some of that North Carolina hospitality. After filling up on love and faery dust in NC Jon, Marsha and I would continue on up to Nova Scotia (after a stop at Hawk's house) and spend a week flutin' with Pat, or should I say learning how to flute (or Bassoon) from Pat... wink.gif ...then, on the very last night we are surprised by a visit from Just Jim (who flew up because he won the lottery), which makes us prolong our stay another few days... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

AHHHH, Wake up Tenzin, Tenzin
Cha oha
I think it would be pretty cool to play with Randy Granger on Hang Drum.... there are many other's it would be nice to duet with....
And Tenzin... my feelers are hurt you would want to stop by my place in TN on your way to NC.......
sniff sniff..... huh.gif mellow.gif

Scott or Mary would be my choice - but of course I don't come near the quality needed for that. I'd love to play with Hans van Gurp as well. That might be possible at some point...
Then I'd love to play with Mari Boine yoiking, she is a very famous Saami artist. Somehow I feel that NAF and yoik fit well together...
Just Jim
Tenzin, I like the way you think!! Me winning the lottery... hehehe... there will be an awful lot of happy flute makers on that day!!!
Ed, Kuz, Geoffrey... all of you, and anyone else I can think of stand to make a real good profit on me when I hit the lottery... wink.gif

OK, seriously I would love to play, duet, or whatever with all of my Portal brothers and sisters... and you all out west, in Canada, Europe, and especially Tenzin, I would also love to come visit and see all your cool flute playing spots!

As for professionals I would love to duet with... Mark Holland, Michael Searching Bear, Jeff Ball, Jonny Lipford, and Jan Seiden immediately come to mind. Oh, and definitly Arvil Bird!!! I haven't met Mary Youngblood yet, but I've talked to her online and besides for being really talented, she seems really nice, so I'll include her as well...
And Ensembles? That's easy, I would give anything to get a chance to sit in with Autumns Child, the Jeff Ball Band, and/or Michael Searching Bears band.
More than anything else I can think of I'd love the chance to play with a band.

That's cool! What a lovely place to play. Those are Maori sculptures? Are they ancestor spirits?

If I weren't actually working productively on class stuff, I would be strongly tempted to indulge in a "kat-kat play time project"- using stills instead of video and doing slow fades, in and out, I could make some nifty slow fades in and out with you on stage with Mark and Scott........ of course, when they got wind of what I was up to, I might have to go to court..... But just imagine it!

Beth, I awoke too early, the dream wasn't over...on the way back Jon and I would purchase one of those big ol' house trailers and we were planning on parking it in your front yard, over by where you cut down that big ol' tree and we were going to stays for months..... laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

And months and months and months, Tenzin

ps. Hope the dream didn't just turn into a nightmare... tongue.gif

Kat, those were carved by a local hippy and are simply art pieces... unsure.gif unsure.gif unsure.gif

To me they were Mark and Carlos... wink.gif

I'll take my duet with Mark and Carlos anyway I can get it, Tenzin

.... well... ok, just so you didn't forget about me... not sure about the house trailer in the front yard, but a motor home is good LOL. My porch is big enough for a bunch of flute players....

Do I REALLY need to answer that? rolleyes.gif I think you all know the answer!

(No ensembles for me. So I'm gonna choose two duets.)

1. Scott August. I'll have to buy earplugs for him, first! laugh.gif

2. Hawk Henries. Don't think I'd ever be the same after playing flutes with Hawk.

For classical flute, I'd like to duet with James Galway.
gurpie
hmmmm...well.......yep of course I would love to play a duet with Scott, for it has been already 11 years ago since I last met him at the Nakai workshop, a Mojave duet would be nice, but you know, there's soo much talent also on this portal, I would love to play together with Jim Cook, for his playing style has a pure and traditional kinda feel to it which I like, Robert (heartsong man) for he's a great guy and feels like a brother to me, Tara for she's a great friend and musician, Gerard...because he's a lonely flutie up there in the cold North of Sweden and he desperately needs somebody to play flute with, Tootie for I really would love to find out if she would really wack me with the wacking flute, and soo many others on here I would love to meet and play duets with....oh yeah....and of course.....Mark Holland...just because of his last name biggrin.gif
Have to get back to my new precious...yep a new flute that needs my undivided attention.....more on that later. cool.gif
It finally looks like summer over here, sun and nice temperatures this weekend. Love it.
Keep [laying those flutes.

Many greetings

Tootie, I'm almost sure there would be no flute whacking going on!
For somebody who loves flute as much as you do....something good is bound to come out of it! smile.gif
If not, we could always put you to work on the Piano.
I have all the faith in the world in your ability! Got to watch out for you quiet ones! wink.gif

Not that the stars of flute playing aren't great....because they are!!! cool.gif
Granted very talented and special gifted bunch of folks they are, but they are just people too!
Kat, I'm sure if you were out here near Mary, like we our, I'm sure she would be delighted to play a tune with you now and then! smile.gif
I truly love the star's music and appreciate them immensely , but my top choice would be to be able to play with a "Flute Portal" flute circle live!
Now that would be cool! We have too many great folks here to name! biggrin.gif
Thanks Geoffrey and Jeff!

One of my favorite parts of the "Yosemite Flute Festival" was after the the concerts and the event was all packed up!
We had a flute circle in a local hall after a nice farewell dinner for all the flute Die-Hard and event helpers.
It was an amazing experience to see everyone's take on this wonderful instrument and the camaraderie that happened!
No one wanted to leave, but eventually we did with warm hugs and a..."see you next year"! cool.gif

Now...if I could pick the Biggies, It would be Mark H. and Jeff B., I really admire their beautiful smooth melodies and knowledge of music!

Well, if you ever get up to Louisville, KY - give me a call (or rather email me first and I can send you my phone # - don't really want to post it here on the forum laugh.gif).

You could get here to Jeffersonville, IN and ride with me up to the flute circles in Indianapolis if you like. (There are two of them now, 1 on First Sat of month, 1 on 3rd Sunday of month.) Heading to one tomorrow.

I can meet you somewhere in between here and there if you like? Would be fun to get permission to play at Mammoth Cave.

Thank you, Rex! wub.gif Tell Marlene to give you a big hug from me!

But, to be honest, I haven't even written a whole song! I can play pieces and make up phrases, but nothing complete. And as to the piano, I'm not great there, either. But I do love music and have fun trying!

I've been thinking (usually dangerous words lol) After playing with the cello, on track #9, on Clint Goss' Backing Track in E, I definitely want a duet with Yo Yo Ma! When the cello takes off and wings skyward, my heart goes with it, even if my flute can't.

Hey Kat, When I first started playing the Flute, I had a next door neighbor tell me and I quote "Go take that Flute and go play for Yo Ma Ma!" huh.gif but I don't think this person played the Cello? wink.gif Many Blessings...Robert

If you like NAF and cello together, there is some beautiful music on the Voyagers cd. R. Carlos Nakai plays with Udi Bar-David on cello in Native American, Jewish and Arabic melodies.
