Dance in circles! Dance in circles!!

What a great weekend. First UPS brought me the his & her flute stands I bought from Marsha and they are absolutley gorgeous! Then UPS came again and delivered both of my new flutes ( gotta love birhtdays)! Yipee!! The High Spirits low D is my first low flute- oh what cool things it will do.
My other aquisition is a walnut Butch Hall G. I need some advice here-I've not seen a brass (?) copper(?) plate on the flue. First, the notes seem to buzz a bit when I start playing but go away after a while. Is this normal? Also- I usually oil the exterior of my flutes weekly ( i use orange wood oil). Do I have to treat this flute differently? Could oil get under the plate and damage the sound?

Howdy Nokeys,
The brass on the Butch Hall flute is not brass, it is anodized aluminum. Thus it will not rust or tarnish. Regarding the finish, Butch has a great finish in that his flutes tend to last a long time. I have some from 1993 that look and sound great. Adding the orange oil will not harm the flute but should be used fairly sparingly since his flutes really do not need much, if any. Regarding the buzz, I am guessing that the flute does not take near the amount of air as the low D and if you are playing after the low flute you might be pushing it a little by blowing too hard. His flutes are usually very consistent regarding breath pressure and a moderate breath should be used for the high and low notes. Good luck with the flute and happy belated birthday!

Congratulations on the new additions and enjoy. Its always exciting!
The oil should not at all hurt the spacer, sometime wax helps the seal. It might just take a little playing around to get the spacer and block set just right, don't be afraid to experiment with it. If you are in doubt e-mail Butch for a suggestion.
I would take a closer look at the orange oil that you are using. Most Citrus Oils usually have petroleum distillates (yuck) to preserve and stabilize them. Read the label closely. Good old Bees wax is my polish of choice. It is safe and effective.
And Happy Birthday! Another Leo? I just had mine last week.

While those plates do move on many flutes that use them, I don't think they do on Butch's. I have one of his in G and it doesn't move. It's inlayed into the flute body so it stays put. Maybe they move on some of his other models.
Also, oiling once a week may be a bit much anyway.
Congrats on the new goodies though - and happy birthday!

SO how often should one oil? I started the once a week thing during winter as it's so darn dry here. I don't want to drown 'em.

I might put a little oil on a Butch Hall flute every 12 months. They are sealed and do not require much maintenance. I Think he uses a blend of tung oil, linseed oil and poly.

Butch's metal plates are aluminum, and inlaid into place. They do not move, like other plains style makers. I agree with Mark, you were probably blowing a little too hard.
Butch's flutes should not need oil, more than once a year, and then only a light application, will be sufficient.
The only flutes that need oil more than once a year are bamboo or rivercane flutes.

While while we're on this subject is there any special care I should be showing to the interior other than shaking out well and drying out around the flue?
Never too old to learn new tricks- just too old to remember them tomorrow.

Must be something about August birthdays that makes us fluties. I'll be 60 0n the 23rd. At our August flute circle meeting 8 of the 14 in attendance had birthdays in August. Strange!
By the way, my dear wife bought me a GREAT Brent Haines F# for my birthday. Cottonwood with juniper trim. Both woods come from Robert Mirabal's back yard. If you check the Woodsounds website it is still on the "available flutes" page as" flute Q".
I'm a fan of Mirabal and a big fan of Taos. I love this flute.
Happy birthday to all.

Tootie, you're throwing away money! I just turned 50, joined AARP, and have already saved money on "senior" discounts (to save for the next flute!)

Tootie, you will get over that "not that old" real quickly, when you familiarize yourself with the benefits.
