As I have sort of gotten to know a few of the more common posters around here via their posts, I have become very curious about just exactly what NA flutes you all have. Now I know for some of us, tallying up all our babies can be a somewhat daunting task, but I also know that we all secretly love to show them off. One of my favorite things about going to a flute circle gathering is seeing everyone elses flute collection, but I will also guiltily admit to enjoying showing off mine. And while we obviously can't have the same experience here online, I thought if we could all list what we had, (currently mind you, I understand that all our collections are apt to change smile.gif ) People could then at least ask questions about specific flutes and makers directly to people who own them. I did a quick search of past posts and couldn't find anything quite like this, I apologize if I missed one and this has already been done.
Me first: smile.gif

A picture of most of these flutes can be seen on my personal website, link listed below.

I may have to go back upstairs and do another quick search to make sure I didn't miss any, but that will do to start. I'd really love to see some of the pros who haunt this forum list what they currently have (cough...Jeff Ball...cough) or even see what some of the makers play, or do makers just play their own flutes? huh.gif

Wow, that's a hefty collection Kevin! If I had a collection that big I'd never play any of them cause I'd be too caught up trying to decide which one to play first! laugh.gif

I have six flutes myself, plus one I don't play and a kit I've yet to finish. Am hoping to add a seventh to that number at the end of this month! wink.gif

Mid A in eastern cedar, mid F in curly cherry, low D eastern cedar all by Douglas Thunderhorse.
F# in black walnut by Matt of Blue Deer Spirit flutes (one of those rare English makers!)
Mid G 'ember flute' in yellowheart by Craig Noss (Fire Flutes)
Mid E eagle flute in Maple by Miguel Medina (Singing Tree Flutes)
The one I don't play is a mid F drone by Sunny Heartley.
And the kit is a drone flute in the key of G I've had sat around for aaaaages and still haven't finished! from Stellar Flutes.
Gerard
I'll try not be envious looking at your list Kevin... I keep on dreaming about a similar collection in my house...
Well I have only 3 flutes, all High Spirits:
Golden Eagle F# in aromatic cedar
Condor low D aromatic cedar
Kestrel high D birch

I also have some other flutes, a few recorders, the best one being a Fehr Alto in pear wood
and a hulusi in C (gourd and bamboo of course).

I'm sure the collection will grow...

Tootie, is he still a mystery since his picture shows up on the Yosemite Flute Festival page (under Silent Auctions)?

Well I don't have many, so this won't take long. rolleyes.gif

High Spirits - Golden Eagle F# (aromatic cedar)

Butch Hall - Little Bird B, and Concert tuned G (both cedar)

Amon Olorin - PF, has both F# and G bodies (ABS Plastic)

And one flute I made in Raymond Redfeather's class. It's a G in cedar.

Tootie, So which do you like better Colyn's or Randy's? Or not necessarily like better....I've seen lots of great reviews of Colyn's flutes. What do you think of Randy's flute?

Both are an actual feasible driving distance from me that I could actually play before I pay.
Rick McDaniel
Ok, that just might get to be the longest post I ever put up. wink.gif

Don't know that my list is entirely up to date, so let me check that, and get back to you.
Rick McDaniel
Nokeys, Randy's flutes are similar to Colyn's, but Colyn's have a little more distinctive tonality, which sets his apart. (Don't ask me how he gets that....I am not a flute maker.)

I like Randy's flutes fine, although I only have an F#. Friends of mine have them, also, and they are very nice flutes.

Comparing them key for key, I would venture that in F#, they sound very similar, and play very similar, but variations in wood, and block, might make some small differences. I actually played Randy's more, at one time, but now I have even more flutes I like, in that key, so I spread it around more.

You would likely be happy with either maker. Of course, if you get a Colyn with some of Kitty's gorgeous art on it, that can make a difference. smile.gif

I hear what you are saying about feeling better. I go look at my collection and wonder what is wrong with me wink.gif blink.gif laugh.gif

That being said, the guy you are talking about who has 90 Brent Haines flutes makes me feel better. When I am really wondering if my desire to collect more flutes is normal or healthy, I just think about Dan "Noisy Bear" Ricketts or Angel Cruz and I feel normal again.

Also, I have been collecting for about 15 years. I know several collectors who have acquired 50 or so flutes in under 3 years. At that rate they will own 255 flutes in 15 years. That is a bunch more than I own. tongue.gif laugh.gif

My missing keys include:

low Bb, 1 more low C, high F#, and high G. I can also use, but do not require, at least one drone in A, F, E, or D. Art flutes are always desirable, when I can find them, as well. Anything beyond that, is gravy. biggrin.gif

Hey Rick. I have often seen the term "art flute" used on this forum. Does it just mean any flute that has been decorated in any way (ie burning, inlay etc.) or is there a more specific meaning? Thanks
Kevin
Rick McDaniel
Art flutes either have carving, woodburning and/ or painted designs, or a combination thereof. Often they have special carved blocks, as well. They would not normally be considered "standard" configurations from a maker.

Often they will be spirit flutes or have other special meaning to the player.

Laura, how do you like your "ember" flute?

Rick, I really enjoy my ember flute. It's quiet but very sweet, so it's perfect for playing when others are around and you don't want to disturb them, or to play something soothing in the background. I prefer a quieter flute anyway so it suits me very well. Craig said he very nearly kept this one for himself, and I can see why he was tempted! smile.gif

I do have a review for it on the forum which I'll update using the new template soon.

I knew you had a bunch of flutes biggrin.gif ohmy.gif ! It looks like you have really done a good job on choosing your flutes both quality and quantity. I sure hope someday I get to see it. I am working on a prototype case for the flute you asked about. I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks for the idea.

Hi Jan,

Truthfully, I do not have all my flutes photographed and listed. I have a new one from Leroy Cully, one from John Stillwell, and one from Gary Khul that I do not have up yet. I also have some simpler flute that I do not have up on the website. For instance, I have several from Butch Hall that are rather plain and a few from Greg Jones that are just made of all Alaskan Yellow cedar. I think I have about 80% of them online but that other group keeps eluding me. I have also been known to sell or give away those more plain flutes so that number keeps changing. I have a small collection of world flutes, such as a buffalo horn flute that I have not photographed. I found a box of Ditzi(sp.) flutes this week while cleaning the flute room that I did not know I had. I guess I need to clean more frequently biggrin.gif .

Regarding amazing flute collections, Dan and Ken Bogart have the biggest collections I am aware of. I know Dan has the most high end with amazing custom flutes. Ken has a collection of old flutes from Dr. Paine's collection and new flutes. I have heard Dennis Sizemore and Mary Youngblood have mind boggling collections, but that is all word of mouth. I am not sure exactly what is in Angel's collection, but what I do know is there, his collection is wonderful. Take care and have a great day!

Angel.......nice to see you post. You have been sooooooo quiet of late. Been wanting to ask about Potomac, and whether the festval is going to continue. I recall seeing / hearing something about due to scheduling issues, you might not have that venue available again.
