I put this topic here, because the papago flute is neither rim blown or NAF style, but does come from the Southwest region.
I recieved this beautiful papago replica in bamboo from Michael Graham Allen last Friday. The pictures do not do this flute justice. If I can get some better ones i will repost. The scale is G, G#, A#, B. But I just had to share.

What a beautiful flute. It must be a joy to play and explore. Congratulations!

Do you use a leather wrap or your finger as the "block" or "bird"?

Tara, being a veganish vegetarian or a vegetarianish vegan, I always throw the leather straps away immediately! But these straps look SO good on this flute I haven't thrown them away yet. I am looking for a suitable substitute and then I'll have to figure out how MGA does that special wrap and try to duplicate it......although the leather wrap he usually puts on as a block was wrapped around the paper and I did throw that away. So to answer your question..I am using a piece of cloth wrapped around the flute as a block...when I need to cheat and just play. But I am also using my finger and trying to perfect that method...although it is difficult. i haven't figured out quite how to do it yet. I can play all right, but I am not satisfied. The tone isn't as clear as it should be and I don't have enough control. I need to find someone who really knows how to wail on one of these and maybe she..oops, I mean they can tell me how...but who? wink.gif
Super-D..unfortunately, someone who spends all his money on wood and bamboo has no money for technology. Right now i am unrecordable, but i would like everyone to hear it.
I have a question for fellow papagoists and pimaists..what is the scale of your flute? I have a book on Papago music which says that the scale was G#, D#, C#, B...but mine is G, G#, A#, B. I'm just curious if mine is different or does MGA make his with a slightly different scale?

Cloudsounds,

Finger as the block: I use the index finger pointed down the flute toward the foot. Experiment with the pressure needed to get the notes clearly (usually light to moderate). Doesn't take to long and you'll be able to place the finger and play with very little adjustment. By the way, the Papago will get at least a couple of over blow notes. I can usually get two without much problem and I've only done all three over blow notes once, when my finger placement must have been spot on!

Enjoy the journey, it's a really different sounding and somewhat challenging flute.

Thank you Webb. That is the direction I have been heading, but still not satisfied. More practice. I have been trying to copy the style of this famous picture although it is not known if he is actually playing or just posing.

About the wrap ,I can show you how to do it, it is pretty much a wider leather wrap which goes double folded on first thurn, when it hits the round once, you start to twist the leather so you get a barbwire shape,go around once ,twice and end it upp with a doubble folded leather again like you start it!
I can take some pictures one by one and show you!
Anyway do you know if Michael have any papago left from that batch, and how long did you wait for him to craft you one?

Does anybody knows if there is other flute makers who make them?
I found a flutemaker named Pat Partridge from Texas ,but got the wrong mail adress to her, and she dont have a webb page i guess?
The adress i got (gmflutes@io.com) turns back to me every time i am sending!

Posing I'd guess... the finger doesn't look flat enough to form the seal needed to the rear (toward the mouthpiece). But then again, the opening above the airway ramp my not have been rectangular or as long on his particular flute. No way to know now...

Best of luck!
